AMRP

The Center of Mobility and Spatial Planning (AMRP) is a multidisciplinary and international oriented research-teaching group of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the Ghent University. AMRP focusses on the elaboration of co-evolutionary planning with regard to new spatial challenges such as the governance and spatial impact of mobility, climate change, energy transition, resilient water management, port-cities, (co-)housing and self-organization. Its research builds on three pillars: space, mobility and governance.

CartoGIS

In the CartoGIS research group (at the Department of Geography of Ghent University), both fundamental and applied research on various aspects of cartography and geographical information science is conducted. Our research group focuses on five major research areas:

  1. Data quality (e.g. quantifying spatial errors; using data quality indicators as a support for recognition of object changes in the update process; objective quality definition of cartographical representations).
  2. Geographical information production, infrastructure, management and modelling (e.g. geographical information and cartography of World Heritage; fundamental and applied studies of map production and map production management).
  3. Risk analysis (e.g. information processing on flood risk; risk analysis and use of geographical information in managing disasters and disaster control).
  4. Analysis of moving objects (e.g. tracking of moving objects; modelling, representing, and reasoning about spatio-temporal information; cognition and linguistics of moving objects; time geography and accessibility analysis).
  5. Historical cartography (e.g. analysis of the production methods of maps, especially in the 16th and 18th century; worldview in the past and the visualization of it on maps).

HP

The unit Health Promotion is an expertise center that aims to promote evidence-based health promotion through academic training of health promotion professionals and through a wide range of research activities. The research unit focuses on health promotion and behavioural change in all age groups (from young children to older adults) and subgroups (overweight children, university students, social economy workers) with special attention to behavioural nutrition, physical activity, sedentary behaviour and substance use (alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and medication use).

The research unit has extensive expertise in the following topics:

  1. Measurement and monitoring of health behaviours and their determinants in different age groups (i.e., young children, school-aged children, adolescents, young adults, adults and older adults). Special attention is paid to the development, validation and feasibility of instruments measuring both health behaviours and their determinants in large-scale surveys.
  2. Research on bio-psycho-social and environmental determinants explaining (social inequalities in) health behaviours in different age groups.
  3. Development of theory- and evidence-based health promotion interventions. Mainly school- and family-based interventions based on the socio-ecological model have been developed and evaluated.
  4. Conducting effect and process evaluations of health promotion (policy) interventions.

IDLAB-BD

Internet & Data Science LAB – Business Development (IDLAB-BD) is an IOF Business Center at Ghent University grouping 40 professors and 300 internet and data science experts, and focusing on transferring knowledge and technology to local and international industry in domains such as Smart Mobility, Smart Grids, Smart Cities and Smart Manufacturing. At IDLAB-BD, technologies are developed that outperform current solutions for communication subsystems, high speed and low power networking, distributed computing and multimedia processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and web semantics. Current activities cover among others technologies for Connected Car, Cognitive Car Intelligent Transport Systems, and Efficient (real-time) Planning of Mobility.

ISyE

Intelligent Systems Engineering is a relatively new research group in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. ISyE helps in addressing the increasing complexity of policy-making and innovative business models for urban mobility. It uses data-driven approaches in order to build better personalized city services for sustainable cities by sensing, citizen participation and co-creation. This leads to a common understanding and awareness of the issues at stake, mobilization of local knowledge and joint problem ownership to co-create sustainable solutions. To date, ISyOC has participated in five EU projects and has served as the core information backbone in national and international government campaigns (e.g. Vlaamse Proeftuinen Elektrische Voertuigen, Fietstelweek 2015-2018, Fietsdataplatform Vlaanderen, VVV Nederland, IWEPS GPSWAL).

ISyOC

The research group ‘Industrial Systems Optimization and Control’ (ISyOC) carries out research in areas such as “Robust integrated production, inventory and routing in supply networks”, “City logistics and traffic management”, “Warehousing design and management”, “In-plant logistics and maintenance”, and “Forecasting systems”. It also carries out research in intelligent systems for smart and resilient systems and societies. The research group develops state-of-art processing chains for processing and fusion of smart city data sources in order to optimize and better manage urban & regional services as well as logistics and mobility operations. Academic excellence in knowledge engineering and operations research are combined to design and implement innovative solutions.

MTD

The Maritime Technology Division at Ghent University has a threefold mission:

  1. Provide an academic education regarding the design, construction, propulsion, functioning and maintaining of marine structures as ships and offshore constructions.
  2. Perform fundamental and applied scientific research in the maritime field, especially regarding the hydrodynamics of vessels and other floating constructions.
  3. Carry out scientific studies for and in collaboration with enterprises and public services in the maritime field.

With these activities the Division wants to support the (Belgian) maritime industry by consolidating, expanding and distributing relevant technical and scientific knowledge.

SEG

The research of the Social and Economic Geography research group (at the Department of Geography of Ghent University) focuses on three main clusters:

  1. Transport geography, transport economics and logistics. Our research focuses on issues of sustainable mobility and congestion problems, activity patterns, modal choice and multimodal transport, transport policy, network analysis, time-space analysis, spatial logistics and city logistics.
  2. Urban geography, urban policy and world city-formation. Our research focuses on present-day evolutions in the Flemish urban system (commuting, migration and housing choice patterns), urban policy (city-monitoring and urban economics), and the formation of a world city network through the internationalization of transport and production networks.
  3. Land use, agro-environment and geography of enterprise. Our research primarily deals with the location analysis of private and public companies, the relationship between transport and production, housing studies, and land use modelling.

SMACS

SMACS stands for Stochastic Modelling and Analysis of Communication systems. The research group is one of the 4 groups of the department of Telecommunication and Information processing (TELIN) of Ghent University. The research activities of the SMACS Research Group can be more or less divided in two parts. The major topic is the statistical analysis of buffers for the storage of digital information, by means of discrete-time queuing models. The second (minor) topic is the design, analysis and optimization of ARQ retransmission protocols.
